Apple Watch Series 2
Built-in GPS. Water resistance to 50 metres.1 A lightning-fast dual‑core processor. And a display that’s two times brighter than before. Full of features that help you stay active, motivated and connected, Apple Watch Series 2 is the perfect partner for a healthy life.
The Apple Watch Series 2 is the company's second-generation smartwatch. And it's been a big hit. The Apple Watch Series 2 has shifted in numbers since its launch in 2016, and leads the field as one of the best smartwatches money can buy.
The Series 2 has shifted focus to fitness, by adding GPS to track runs and cycling session sans iPhone. It's now fully waterproof and offers swim tracking in the pool and in open water. Apple has even introduced yje Breathe app to help you relax. Apple's intentions are clear: it's making a big play for sports watch owners.
1. BUILT IN GPS
Want to go for a run or a bike ride but don't want to take your iPhone with you? No problem, the built-in GPS means that the Apple Watch Series 2 can keep track of your distance, speed, number of paces and heart rate.
The Apple keynote demonstrated that it's especially handy for following tiny maps on a tiny screen when you're hiking in Yosemite National Park, alerting you should you stray from the path.
The lack of a built-in cellular service means that it can't, however, automatically call for help should you get attacked by a bear or fall down a ravine while squinting at the map to work out where you are.
2. WATER RESISTANT TO 50 METRE
Accidental splashes of Asti Spumante. Apple claimed that it's water resistant to 50 metres because, after all, who hasn't gone diving and forgotten to take their digital watch off first?
Well, actually, Apple advises against wearing it for diving. "Apple Watch Series 2 should not be used for scuba diving, water-skiing or other activities involving high-velocity water or submersion below shallow depth," says the small print.
Apple said that the device conforms to ISO standard 22810-2010, which means that "it may be used for shallow-water activities like swimming in a pool or ocean".
So don't, under any circumstances, actually submerge it to a depth of 50 metres. You may find that, like the iPhone 7, water damage is not covered under the Apple Watch Series 2 warranty.
3. DUAL CORE MICROPROCESSOR
microprocessor at the heart of the Apple Watch Series 2 is 50 per cent faster than the original Apple Watch microprocessor, and offers double the performance for on-screen graphics.
As such, it should be able to run more powerful apps. It remains to be seen how power efficient it is, however, although Apple said that the Series 2 watch will last a whole day on a single charge.
Manufactured by TSMC to a 16nm FinFET manufacturing process, it is a customised application processor that integrates memory and storage, and supports wireless, sensors and I/O in a single, compact package.
TSMC said that the company's 16FFC manufacturing technology was developed specifically for low-cost, low-power applications.
4. IMPROVED DISPLAY
The display on the new Apple Watch is twice as bright as the original device so you don't need to squint quite as hard when you check the map. Apple described it as the brightest display the firm has ever produced.
The display is supported by a vastly improved GPU, presumably supplied by Imagination Technologies which supplied the not-so-impressive GPU on the S1 chip.
Apple claimed that the screen pumps out 1,000 nits, making it "even easier to see important information at a glance when outside on a sunny day".
5. WATCH OS3
WatchOS 3, though, will launch applications around seven times faster and you can write messages with your fingertips directly to the watch. No, really. Come back.
It also includes fixes for Activity Sharing and Clock face layouts, as well as an Auto Unlock feature.
There is an Emergency SOS feature for contacting emergency services, or any other emergency number, that you can activate when you press the side button to bring up the power-off menu.
